Let me translate this project’s title if you don’t know Icelandic (which wouldn’t be surprising given that only around 350,000 people speak the language). For example, helvíti hefur frosið yfir means hell has frozen over. Back in January, I came up with a concept for a movie or tv show (I could see it going either way) that blended with the elements of ancient Norse mythology and the story of a modern-day vigilante. Then, in Reykjavík, Iceland, we follow a young devout pagan who was given powers by the goddess Hel and became a vigilante.
In my original post back in January, I came up with a basic outline for my idea, including a breakdown of the characters, setting, and plot. A few weeks later, I came up with three mini-project ideas to further explore my concept. First, I went with projects I imagined would be helpful during a pitch/creative session with producers, writers, and executives. Having multiple smaller projects is easier for me than doing one large project, mainly because of my ADD attention span. They were a lot of fun, and I loved how they all turned out.
So, without further ado, here is my final project!
The Cast (character mockups)
I have been jonesing to do full makeup looks for the past two years between virtual classes and mask mandates. Since I lack the artistic skill to sketch characters, I used my face as the canvas for the two-character mockups: the protagonist and Hel. These were fun, and I got to play with colors I don’t usually use in my everyday looks. I also got two new eyeshadow palettes. I am a sucker for new palettes.
The Sightings (photos and videos)
I had to take photos and videos of myself in makeup to make the hours I spent on them worth it (especially since no one else would see them in person). Everyone who has gained new powers or abilities goes on a journey of harnessing them. Almost always, they get caught by others. In Hel’s case, she gets caught on a security camera stealing vodka. Our protagonist makes eerie posts on social media to scare the criminal underworld.
The Ambiance (the music)
Every story needs a good soundtrack to accompany it. Mine just so happens to be comprised of mainly Billie Eilish songs. I do not apologize. Billie is my soul mate. All the pieces have a dark, edgy vibe, perfect for the story.
