Every movie and tv series needs a soundtrack that makes sense with its plot and adds to its vibe. Here is mine for Helvíti hefur frosið yfir. Just a heads up, it is mostly Billie Eilish.
The Songs
First up is GRRRLS by AViVA. The song is about not fitting in and not wanting to fit in. It is also about wanting to take charge of who you are. My favorite thing about this song is its cover art. I can see the protagonist sitting on a stone throne with blood spatters on it like she just killed the person who originally sat on it.
Next up is all the good girls go to hell by Billie Eilish. This part of the story is where the protagonist meets Hel for the first time. The lyric “my Lucifer is lonely” speaks of perfection for Hel’s loneliness down in Hel and wanting someone to team up with her.
Possibly the most famous and well-known song on this playlist is a bad guy by Billie Eilish. After receiving her powers from Hel, this song plays when the protagonist trains and starts targeting low-level criminals. The screen goes back and forth from shots of her practicing spells and boxing to shots of her beating up criminals. I imagine a criminal saying to her that she is the bad guy and her replying, “duh,” right on tune when Billie says it.
The leading up to the climax is the protagonist going after a central crime boss who is conducting business in Reykjavík. The song playing when she enters their secret compound and fights her way to the belly of the beast is COPYCAT by Billie Eilish. “You committed, I’m your crime” is a perfect catchphrase for a vigilante. The lyric “I don’t belong to anyone, but everybody knows my name” speaks to the protagonist’s independence and growing reputation.
At the climax of the story, the protagonist fights the crime boss. She finally transforms from the quiet, reserved woman with no faith in humanity to the supernatural, outspoken pagan vigilante whose new faith in humanity rests within her future. The full extent of her powers is realized, and she kills the crime boss. You should see me in a crown by Billie Eilish plays during this transformation. She becomes the true proxy of the queen of hell herself.
In the aftermath of the climax, the world is shaken and in awe of the mysterious, god-like hero who took down one of the giant crime bosses in Europe. As the protagonist walks down the streets of Reykjavík with newfound hope for the world, Therefore I Am by Billie Eilish plays in the background, and the screen cuts to the credits.
